As many expected, the Gang Green went offense in the 2nd round, as they selected WR Devin Smith from Ohio State. Smith is a speedy receiver with 4.4 speed who averaged 28.2 yards per reception last season and scored a touchdown every 4 catches in college. According to some scouts, Smith tracks the deep ball better than any player in recent memory and will become an instant vertical weapon for the Jets.
In the 3rd round the Jets were scheduled to select at #70 overall but traded down to #82, also acquiring pick #152 (5th round), pick #229 (7th round) and WR Devier Posey from the Houston Texans. Posey, a former 3rd round pick with Houston, had 22 catches in 3 seasons with the Texans. Last season Posey appeared in just one game, making one catch for 30 yards.
The pick acquired in the trade was then used to select OLB Lorenzo Mauldin from Louisville. Mauldin is a hard hitter who's very good in pursuit. As a senior, he had 51 tackles (13 for loss) and 6.5 sacks. He also registered 9.5 sacks as a junior.
