Following yesterday's practice session that Rex Ryan dubbed as "brutal" for rookie QB Geno Smith, it did not come as a surprise when earlier today the Jets announced QB Mark Sanchez as the starter for the second preseason game against the Jaguars. Despite playing at home, Sanchez might find himself in a hostile environment, as the fans mercilessly booed him late last season.
Smith, who suffered an ankle injury in the first preseason game, had an awful practice yesterday, throwing three interceptions. According to Ryan, the rookie is still affected by the injured ankle and might not play against Jacksonville at all. Ryan will hold a teleconference with reporters at 3PM today.
If Smith does not play at all, it will be difficult for him to win the starting job with pretty much one preseason game left to play (starters usually rest in the final preseason game). Nevertheless the QB competition is still open, although Sanchez is obviously in the lead despite throwing a pick-six against the Lions.
