The Gang Green finally signed a couple of free agents who did not play for them last season. QB Drew Stanton, a former Lion, signed a 1-year deal worth $1.25M to be Mark Sanchez's backup. WR Chaz Schilens, who spent his entire career with the Raiders, signed a 1-year deal as well. His contract is worth $765K, $500K of which is guaranteed.
The Jets targeted Stanton, the Lions’ second-round pick in 2007, shortly after the start of the free agency on Tuesday. Stanton flew to New Jersey on Thursday before coming to an agreement earlier today. Although the Jets initially favored QB Chad Henne, they quickly realized that Henne was out of their price range and had to settle for Stanton. Henne signed with the Jaguars.
The 6-4, 225 lbs Schilens played for new wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal in Oakland. Although Schilens fits the profile of a tall and speedy wideout that the Jets’ were lacking, he’s had trouble staying healthy in the past.
Schilens, who played four seasons with the Raiders, missed 13 games from 2009-2010 due to injury. Last season Schilens played in 15 games (5 starts), catching 23 passes for 271 yards, 2 TD.
The Jets also expect S LaRon Landry to visit them this weekend.
QB Brady Quinn's visit has been cancelled due to the signing of Drew Stanton.
