The Jets finally made some moves today, signing two unrestricted free agents - QB Drew Stanton (Detroit) and WR Chaz Schilens (Oakland). Stanton will serve as Mark Sanchez's backup with pretty much no chance of ever winning the starting job, while Schilens, who's had injury problems, could be a sleeper. Both players were signed to 1-year contracts.
So, once again the Jets don't have anyone who could give Sanchez at least some competition in training camp. Stanton started 4 games for the Lions, posting a 2-2 record. He has thrown 187 passes in the NFL, completing only 55.6% of those.
Chaz Schilens played in 15 games (5 starts) for the Raiders last year. He caught 23 of 33 passes thrown to him, finishing the season with 271 receiving yards, 2 TD. It's also worth mentioning that Schilens was moved down to #4 on the depth chart in Week 17.
The Gang Green also had Cincinnati S Reggie Nelson for a visit and will continue talking to him tomorrow. Another safety, S LaRon Landry, is expected to visit Florham Park over the weekend.
Nelson, the former Jacksonville Jaguars 1st round pick who was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, may be the best fit because of his cover skills, but he could also be more expensive.
Landry is an experienced starter from the Washington Redskins, though he has some injury concerns, a season-ending Achilles injury that he has been rehabbing without surgery, which could drop his price tag. Landry also missed 7 games in 2010 due to another injury.
According to ProFootballTalk, the Jets had $12.7M of salary cap room prior to today's signings.
