WR Santonio Holmes, who was traded to the New York Jets on Sunday from the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be suspended for the first 4 games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The Gang Green acquired the troubled receiver from the Steelers for a 5th round draft pick in the upcoming draft. ESPN 1050 in New York first reported the trade, which Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly confirmed on Monday at the team's camp in Cortland, NY.
Holmes has been arrested twice and cited for marijuana possession from 2006-2008. He's also under investigation for assault in Orlando, Fla. last month.
Holmes is heading to New York today to take a physical. He will then will meet with Jets officials before the trade is officially announced.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on Monday that according to sources, the Steelers were prepared to release Holmes had they not been able to trade him.
Meanwhile, WR David Clowney, posted a couple of messages on his twitter account that were interpreted by another Jets website as him being upset over the Santonio Holmes trade. Here's what Clowney said:
Lord what am I doing wrong
I know this is a test,.. But God never puts you thru anything you can't handle. I trust you Lord
Was Clowney upset over something? Possibly. Was it the trade? His words provided no indication of that.
This trade, however, most likely means that Clowney will drop to #5 on the depth chart behind WR Braylon Edwards, WR Jerricho Cotchery, WR Santonio Holmes and WR Brad Smith.
