According to head coach Rex Ryan, there are about six spots still up for grabs on the projected 53-man roster that every NFL team must finalize by 4 PM EST this Saturday. The Jets currently have 75 players on their roster and will have to cut 20 of them to comply with the league's rules (the Jets will be allowed to carry two players over the limit due to the upcoming suspensions for LB Calvin Pace and DE Shaun Ellis). Once these cuts are finalized, the Gang Green will be able to put 8 players on their practice squad.
The final preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles will be a make it or break it chance for quite a few players, including LB Brandon Renkhart, RB Danny Woodhead, CB Marquice Cole, TE Kareem Brown, P Reggie Hodges and LB Jason Trusnik. The starters will play only one series on Thursday, leaving plenty of time for the backups to battle it out for the remaining roster spots.
There's still plenty of uncertainty with wide receiver, tight end and punter positions. The New York Jets don't really have a proven backup tight end, while the punting situation has been quite a mess since the start of training camp. Don't be surprised to see the Jets pick up players released by other teams at these positions this week.
