Mickens out for season; Ellis’ talks stall

According to Newsday, CB Ray Mickens had a second MRI test, which revealed a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a season-ending injury.

Third-round pick CB Derrick Strait will now most likely play nickel, while undrafted free agent CB Roderick Bryan will be involved in the dime package.

It seems likely that the Jets will sign a veteran cornerback, but not until Week 2, when they wouldn't have to guarantee his salary for the whole season. Terrance Shaw, released by Carolina this week, could be a possibility if he's healthy. Terrell Buckley and former Giant Ralph Brown also are available.

In other news, it appears that the contract talks with DE Shaun Ellis have reached an impasse. The Jets have offered Ellis a multiyear deal that included an $15M signing bonus, but Ellis and his agent have turned the offer down. It is believed that the deal for Ellis remains on the table, and Ellis may eventually take it. But there's a chance he'll wait until after the season, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Meanwhile, the Jets have turned to OT Kareem McKenzie who's also in the final year of his contract.
